Homeostasis is the process of maintaining life. In other words, it is the collective actions of a cell to keep itself intact and functioning properly. On a larger scale, a multicellular organism's homestasis is governed by the cooperativity between homeostatic cell types, where paracrine signaling plays a vital role. Homeostasis can be defined through myriad physical measurements of particular parameters within and between cells, but is generally intended to describe the idea of preservation of the overall health of a living system.
